IKEA’s food court is almost as well-known as its furnishings and housewares. As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, the multinational retailer promised in November 2020 to make half of its menu plant-based by 2025.

IKEA recently released its 2022 Sustainability Report, which details how the business is progressing towards its climate goal of becoming a climate positive company by 2030.

IKEA has been experimenting with vegan alternatives for some time, having released its first version of plant-based Swedish meatballs in 2015. Since then, the furniture juggernaut has added new items such as vegetarian hot dogs, dairy-free soft serve and plant-based chicken.

There are only a few plant-based dishes on the menu at US shops (as opposed to Europe, where vegan options include dairy-free soft serve). But, the future could contain more vegan food.

Dairy production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, according to environmental leaders, and the industry has also been linked to deforestation and other environmental issues. The decision by IKEA to remove dairy products from its menus will almost certainly have a major effect on the industry.

According to the report, “as a significant food provider, the IKEA business also has a responsibility to inspire and enable healthier and more sustainable food options. ” By introducing new products and enhancing our communication strategy, we continued the work of enhancing and extending our plant-based food offering throughout the year as 520 million visitors sampled its food in its bistros, cafes, and restaurants in 2022, with the footprint of its food playing a significant role.

The report stated, “We continue to investigate where and how we can eliminate or replace dairy in our range (without sacrificing taste) to further reduce the climate impact of our food ingredients.”
