Lassi is a traditional Indian yogurt-based drink, but this particular lassi from Kat Odell’s Unicorn Food cookbook is a vegan beverage where we use coconut yogurt. While the original recipe specifies coconut milk instead of any vegan yogurt, you have the option to use coconut yogurt as a substitute or make your own using coconut milk.

The Anti-Inflammatory Power of Coconut Milk Turmeric Lassi

The Coconut Milk Turmeric Lassi is a nutrient-rich beverage designed to serve as an effective vegan anti-inflammatory drink that can help improve your health and slow down aging. It contains a mix of anti-inflammatory spices, such as turmeric, black pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon which are well-known for its antioxidant qualities supported by scientific research.

Anti-oxidants are natural substances found in many plant-based foods like turmeric. They help fight harmful molecules in our bodies called free radicals, which can speed up aging. That’s why it’s important to include antioxidant-rich foods in our diet to stay healthy and slow down aging.

Research indicates that turmeric, containing the antioxidant curcumin, helps combat harmful molecules, and its potential anti-cancer properties highlight its role in promoting overall health and longevity.

inger is frequently added to lassi for its delightful taste and health perks, including lowering cholesterol levels and enhancing metabolism. Its antioxidants, like gingerols, combined with other antioxidant-rich ingredients, contribute to the creation of a potent anti-inflammatory lassi, as demonstrated in Kat Odell’s recipe.

Adding black pepper to lassi enhances the health benefits of turmeric. When these two ingredients are combined, they work together to improve the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric. This enhancement is attributed to piperine, a compound found in black pepper, which helps the body absorb curcumin more efficiently compared to consuming turmeric alone. (1)

Recipe: Coconut Milk Turmeric Lassi

ingredients for 2 serving

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 3/2 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 cup ice cubes, plus extra for serving
  • 1/2 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
  • 4 teaspoons agave nectar
  • 2 teaspoon freshly grated peeled ginger (from about 1-inch piece)
  • 1\4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3\2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1\4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3\2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 teaspoon probiotic powder

How to make Coconut Milk Turmeric Lassi

Buying coconut milk from the store isn’t always ideal, as it may contain additives and preservatives. However, making it at home can be challenging. To simplify the process of making coconut milk at home, one can use a vegan milk maker.

  • Get your blender and throw in the coconut milk, frozen mango chunks (don’t let them escape!), ice cubes (they’re like the cool party guests), ripe avocado (it’s the smooth operator), agave nectar (for that sweet talk), freshly grated ginger (zesty zing!), black pepper (a little spice never hurt anyone), ground cardamom (for that fancy touch), ground cloves (like a warm hug), and ground cinnamon (because who doesn’t love cinnamon).
  • Now, give it all a whirl on high speed! Let them mix and mingle until they become one smooth and creamy concoction. It’s like a blender dance party in there!
  • Next up, add the frozen pineapple chunks (they’re the pineapple of everyone’s eye), turmeric (the golden touch), and probiotic powder (for those good gut vibes). Let them join the party in the blender and blend again until everything gets cozy and smooth.
  • If your lassi seems a bit too thick, don’t panic! Just add more coconut milk or water until it’s just right. You’re the master of consistency!
  • Time to serve up this party in a glass! Pour your lassi over ice cubes if you’re feeling fancy, and get ready to enjoy a flavorful and nutritious sip of coconut mango ginger goodness!
  • Now, raise your glass and toast to the most deliciously fun lassi you’ve ever made. Cheers to blending adventures and tasty creations!
