100% Plant-Based

Green highlights represent ingredients verified to come from plant, fungal, or microbial sources.

Animal-Derived Flagged

Red highlights unmask hidden dairy proteins (casein, whey), slaughter byproducts (gelatin, lard), and insect resins (carmine, shellac).

Ambiguous Additives

Amber highlights denote additives (e.g. E471, Vitamin D3) requiring manufacturer verification.

Provenance & Verification Standards: Additive evaluations are mapped directly to official EFSA and FDA Food Additive safety registrations. For ambiguous dual-source ingredients (e.g. glycerides or bone-char filtered cane sugar), direct manufacturer confirmation or independent vegan certification (e.g. Vegan Action, The Vegan Society) is advised.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Ingredient Checker parse labels?
The parser splits text by commas, semicolons, bullets, and linebreaks, strips allergen parentheticals and percentages, and cross-references each token against verified EFSA/FDA additives and food science datasets.
What do the color tags mean?
Green tags indicate 100% plant-based ingredients. Red tags flag confirmed animal or insect derivatives (e.g. whey, gelatin, carmine). Amber tags indicate ingredients that can be derived from plant or animal sources (e.g. mono- and diglycerides, refined white cane sugar).
Are "May Contain Milk" allergen statements non-vegan?
"May contain" statements are manufacturing cross-contamination warnings for consumers with life-threatening food allergies. They do not denote intentional animal ingredients. The vast majority of vegans and vegan certifying bodies consider such products vegan.
